Description
A sprawling, spreading rhizomatous grass to 1 m high, of ground layer and understorey of shaded places in forest from Guinea to Fernando Po, and across tropical Africa, to Madagascar, Mascarenes, Ceylon, SE Asia and Polynesia.The plant is capable of extensive spreading to form large pure strands. It produces adventitious cover on coffee plantation in Ethiopia where shade trees have been left standing.The leaves have an absorbent capacity and are used in the Central African Republic by honey gatherers to mop up spilled honey (2).In Ivory Coast leaf-sap is massaged onto the neck to reduce enlarged ganglia
