Information
Annual herbs. Stems often prostrate or scrambling, sparsely branched, erect branches up to c. 1 m. long, younger parts covered with stinging hairs on short protuberances, rarely glabrescent. Leaves 6–10 x 3–7 cm., ovate; apex acuminate; base truncate, rounded or subcordate; margin finely serrate or toothed, teeth up to 25 on each half of the lamina and usually less than 5 mm. high; lamina upper surface with short stiff hairs, lower surface with short stiff hairs on the nerves. Petioles 4–6 cm. long. Stipules up to 7 mm. long, with a few stiff hairs. Inflorescences sparsely branched, axillary, with scattered stiff or stinging hairs; male 4–6 x 3–5 cm.; female 4–6 x 2–3 cm.
Habitat
In montane and upland evergreen forest and montane scrub, along paths and rivers

1100–1700 m. In S. Cape Province (Knysna) in forest near sea-level.
