Information
Tufted perennial with the stem-bases covered by the fibrous remains of old torn leaf-sheaths.; stems 15–50 cm long and 0.5–1.5 mm thick, sharply triangular with 1–3 longitudinal ridges on each of the 3 sides, densely scabrid at least on ridges above. Leaves with 10–25 cm long and 2–5 mm wide blades, strongly scabrid on midrib and margins. Inflorescence a globose or somewhat irregular whitish head 0.7–1.5 cm in diam., with a solitary spike or more commonly with 1–3 small inconspicuous lateral spikes surrounding the central spike; involucral bracts 2–4, leafy and reflexed or spreading, the largest 2–15 cm long. Spikelets 4–6 mm long, 2–4-flowered. Glumes 3–4 mm long, whitish with many prominent lateral nerves; keel unwinged, glabrous or with a few prostrate hairs. Style with 2 long branches. Nutlet 1.5–1.7 x 0.7–0.8 mm wide, flattened, minutely papillose.
