J. dinteri S. Moore: 246 (1919); P.G. Mey.: 35 (1968); Graham: 592 (1988).
Information
Annual herb, sometimes rooting at lower nodes, (0.04-)0.30-0.82 m high. Leaves always with at least some hairs, these longer on veins than on lamina, lamina narrowly lanceolate to ovate, (15-)35-93 x (7-) 14-42 mm, apex acute to attenuate-obtuse, base cuneate; petiole slender, 3-31 mm long. Inflorescence of scattered sessile axillary cymes. Bract 1, foliose, with long cottony hairs, 4-14 x 1.5-7.5 mm. Bracteoles reduced and triangular. Calyx with long cottony hairs. Corolla 5-7 mm long, pale to deep mauve or violet, palate often white with dark mauve lines or spots. Pollen 2-colporate, 32^4-3 um long, sexine areolate. Capsules dimorphic; normal capsule 4-seeded, delicate, up to 7 mm long; intermixed with 1 -seeded capsules, these shorter than normal ones, with 4 serrate longitudinal wings, indehiscent.
Habitat
The presence of dimorphic capsules, as well as other characters, strongly argues a relationship between ./. hetero-carpa subsp. dinteri and J. protracta (no. 9), as well as with Siphonoglossa leptantha subsp. leptantha. In all three cases the dimorphism takes the same form.
Use
11. Justicia heterocarpa T. Anderson subsp. dinteri (S. Moore) Hedren in Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis 29,1: 106 (1989a). Type: Namibia, Otjitua, Dinter 87 (BM, lecto., selected by Hedren 1989a; B!; NBG!).
