Names
JUSSIAEA stenorraphe Brenan [family ONAGRACEAE], in K.B. 1953: 164 (1953). Type: Nigeria, 28 km. N. of Kaduna, Keay FHI. 28113 (K, holo.!)
Information
Very polymorphic. Shrubby or less often herbaceous, erect, much branched, 1–3 m. high, more or less densely spreading-hairy all over, rarely sparingly so or merely pubescent. Leaves from almost linear to elliptic, 2–10 cm. long, 0.2–3.8 cm. wide, acute or subacute at apex; petiole 0–4 mm. long, rarely more. Sepals 4, (4–) 6–13 mm. long, 1.5–5 mm. wide. Petals yellow, 6–16 mm. long, 4–16 mm. wide. Stamens twice as many as sepals. Apex of ovary, supporting the 2–6 mm. long style, flat or somewhat raised (to 2 mm.). Capsules thin-walled, puberulous to hairy, 1–4 cm. long, 1.5–4 mm. wide; pedicels 1–10 (–20) mm. long. Seeds pluriseriate in each cell, free, ellipsoid-oblong, narrow-raphed, 0.75–0.8 mm. long, 0.4 mm. wide, brown.
Range
DISTR. (of species as whole). Widespread in tropical Africa (see above under separate varieties), but unknown elsewhere
Altitude range
the first three varieties from 600–1370 m.; the var. speciosa only collected at 10 m.
Notes
J. stenorraphe has been in the past much confused in herbaria with J. pilosa H.B.K. (= J. leptocarpa Nutt.) and, rather more pardonably, with J. villosa Lam. (= J. suffruticosa L.). In many ways it is close to J. suffruticosa, but differs from all forms of that in the narrow-raphed and usually longer seeds. In addition the more robust and not infrequently shrubby habit of J. stenorraphe, the commonly rather large sepals and petals, and the often longer style will separate it from one or another of the forms of J. suffruticosa. The sepals of J. stenorraphe often turn bright red inside after the petals have fallen.
