perennial, tufted on a short rhizome; produced leaf one only from the middle of the stem, long, subulate, septate, the others reduced to sheaths; stem moderately stout, 2–4 ft. long; inflorescence ample, terminal, reaching 1/2 ft. long and broad; flowers many in a cluster; bracts ovate, shorter than the flowers; perianth-segments lanceolate, 1/12 in. long; stamens 6, rather shorter than the perianth; capsule oblong, brown, acute, as long as the perianth; seeds not tailed. null
