Information
Robust perennial with a thick horizontal rhizome with few–many culms often set in dense rows; stems 50–120 cm long and 2–5 mm thick. Leaves 3–6, basal, reduced to hardened brownish sheaths or 1 or more with ± well developed leaf-blades. Inflorescence much-branched, usually lax, 5–30 cm long and often only 2–7 cm wide, consisting of 1–few sessile to subsessile and 1–many stalked panicles; major involucral bract 3–15 cm long, terete, pungent, erect and continuing in the direction of the stem. Tepals 2–3 mm long, equal or the outer somewhat longer, elliptic-lanceolate, the outer obtuse to acute, the inner obtuse, whitish to light reddish brown with wide transparent border. Stamens 6; anthers 1.5–2 mm long, more than 2.5 times as long as the filaments. Style c. 2 mm long including c. 1 mm long stigmas. Capsule c. 4–5 x 1.5 mm, much longer than the tepals, lanceolate-acute, yellowish-brown, glossy, ending in a c. 0.2 mm long mucro. Seeds 1–1.5 mm long, obliquely lanceolate, reddish-brown with prominent pale basal and apical appendages.
Range
N1–3 widespread from Sicilia and North Africa eastwards to Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan,southern Africa.
Altitude range
near sea level to 900 m.

Notes
J. rigidus has often been confused with J. maritimus Lam., a related species with a more obtuse capsule only slightly longer than the tepals.
