perennial, tufted on a short rhizome; produced leaves 3–4, short, ascending, subulate, septate; stems moderately stout, erect, 1–2 ft. long; inflorescence an ample terminal panicle; flowers 4–14 in a cluster; bracts ovate-cuspidate, shorter than the flowers; perianth-segments lanceolate, 1/5 in. long; stamens 6, much shorter than the perianth; capsule oblong, dark brown, distinctly exserted, valves rigid; seeds not tailed. null
