JATROPHA rivae Pax [family EUPHORBIACEAE], (1897).
Information
Shrub to 2.5 m tall, with usually ± purplish-brown, pubescent twigs. Leaves mostly clustered on short-shoots; blade oblanceolate to obovate, 5–35 x 5–15 mm, cuneate at the base, rounded to emarginate at the apex, entire to dentate or sinuately lobed; petiole 0–2 mm long. Stipules up to 7 mm long, spinescent, straight or recurved, with a thickened base enclosing the leaf-scar. Inflorescences up to 7 cm long, pubescent. Male flowers: calyx c. 2–2.5 mm long, with obtuse ciliate lobes; petals c. 3–3.5 mm long. Female flowers: sepals accrescent to at least 3.5 mm in fruit, often glandular-denticulate; ovary glabrous; styles united at base with bifid thickened stigmas. Fruit 8–10 x 8 mm, glabrous. Seeds c. 6 x 3.5 mm, with a fimbriate caruncle c. 3 mm wide.
