JASMINUM radcliffei S. Moore [family OLEACEAE], in J.L.S. 37: 178 (1905). Type: Uganda, Kagera Valley, near Mulema, Bagshawe 284 (BM, holo.!, K, iso.!). This is a variant with less indumentum on the leaves. It may prove to be useful to consider it a variety when more field work has been done on the species and the genetical value of the indumentum characters is known. Intermediates, however, occur.
JASMINUM mildbraedii Gilg & Schellenb. [family OLEACEAE], in Z.A.E. 529 (1914); T.T.C.L. 391 (1949). Type: Tanganyika, “Bukoba-Bezirk Itara, in Galerie-Buschwald in einem “Tal” des Steppenhügels über dem Orte,” June 1907, Mildbraed 186 (B, holo. ) is, e descriptione, the same variant as J. radcliffei S. Moore.
JASMINUM pulvilliferum S. Moore [family OLEACEAE], in J.B. 44: 24 (1906). Type: Kenya, Mombasa, Frere Town, Dec. 1885, W. E. Taylor (BM, holo.!). A variant with smaller leaves than usual.
JASMINUM buchananii S. Moore [family OLEACEAE], in J.B. 54: 288 (1916). Type: Kenya, Bura, A. Buchanan (BM, holo.!). A variant also with smaller leaves than usual.
Information
Climbing shrub or scrambler, the youngest branches densely pubescent, later glabrescent and finally glabrous. Leaves simple, opposite or (rarely) subopposite; blades ovate or oblong-ovate, gradually narrowed to an acute and sometimes shortly apiculate apex, very variable in size but the well-formed ones 2.5–8 cm. long, 1–4.9 cm. broad, more or less densely and softly pubescent on both surfaces particularly the lower, midrib and main veins more or less flat or very slightly impressed on upper and subprominent on lower surface; petiole 2–5 mm. long, densely and softly pubescent; not obviously articulated. Inflorescences terminal and lateral, with the branches and pedicels densely pubescent, 1–18-flowered; pedicels 1–2 mm. long at anthesis lengthening up to 7 mm. long in fruit. Calyx generally strongly pubescent; lobes linear-lanceolate, 2–5 mm. long, often curving outwards. Corolla white, tube sometimes red, sweetly scented; tube 1.3–1.7 cm. long.
