Information
glabrous; rhizome 3 by 1/10 in., clothed by rigid, lanceolate, striate, dull brown scales 1/4 in. long (usually 0 in herbarium examples); stems 6–16 in. long, tufted, each with 1 head; leaf on the uppermost sheath long, often 2/3 the length of the stem, 1/20 in. broad, channelled; broader leaves from the lower sheaths are sometimes present; bracts often 3 or more, spreading, lowest 1/2–1 1/2 in. similar to the leaves, not much dilated at the base; head 1/3–1 1/2 in. in diam., manifestly compound of 6–20 spikelets, greenish with chestnut spots when young, brownish-red when old; spikelets 1/4 in. long; glumes ovate, obtuse, or obtuse with a hardly excurrent mucro, or subacute; nut 2/5 the length of the glume, obovoid, trigonous, ashy-black, minutely transversely interrupted lineolate; style shorter than the nut, branches 3 linear, long; gynophore small obpyramidal, margin minutely 3-lobed. null
