glabrous, slender, tufted, annual; stems 1–3 in. long, carrying 2–7 spikelets sessile in one head; leaves often 2/3 the length of the stem, linear, flaccid; uppermost sheath sometimes nearly leafless; lower sheaths red; spikelets 1/6 by 1/10 in., many-flowered; lowest bract linear, leaf-like, often 1/2– 1/3 in. long; glumes boat-shaped, ovate, obtuse, with a short excurrent, sometimes recurved, mucro; nut minute, less than 1/2 the length of the glume, broadly obovoid, obtuse, smooth, outermost cells subquadrate inconspicuous; style-branches 3. null
