Notes
The pubescence of patent yellow hairs on the stems of the type of I. dasyclada is, I feel certain, due to a type of galling or some other pathological condition, since it ceases abruptly at the base of the pedicels and peduncles, and the youngest parts of the stem, which one would expect to be the most hairy, are in fact glabrous. Faulkner 1892 is, on the other hand, a genuinely hairy form. Koritschoner 2217 (Tanganyika, Shinyanga) with very narrow linear leaves and acute sepals is possibly a form of I. lapathifolia but the peduncles are short. The specimen is, however, poor, only the growing apex being preserved. The inflorescences are young and 2–3-flowered. Irwin in E.A.H. 11427 (Kenya, Sultan Hamud) is the same plant but is also poor. Miss Ossent has also recently collected this plant. It is closely allied to I. lapathifolia but the corolla is short, only 1.3–1.5 cm. long, the peduncles 6 mm. long and the leaves linear (Kitui District, Yatta, 13 May 1960, Ossent 441A!; Machakos District, Athi Plains, 8 May 1960, Ossent 452!). None of the material is sufficient to allow any conclusions to be formed as to the correct status of the plant.
