Information
Subterranean rhizome giving rise to several massive erect rhizomes bearing succulent white roots and masses of old leaf fibres; inflorescences appearing during the dry season before the leaves, which develop before flowering is completed; flowers yellow, frequented by bees; in montane grassland.

Notes
[Several species described by Nel can hardly be maintained as distinct in this confusing genus. The appearance of the plants changes as the leaves develop. However, field workers should observe the variation within populations to determine the taxonomic worth of the various characteristics. Nel seems to have been in error in attributing divided anthers to H. ledermannii.-F.N.H.]
