Information
Moderately robust herb 16–50 cm tall. Corm ovoid or cylindrical, yellow-orange inside, 4–11≈3.5–6 cm, crowned by black or brown fibrous remnants of former leaves, often very copious. Leaves forming a short pseudostem, tristichous, erect at first soon becoming arcuate to ± straggling, conduplicate at least towards the base, linear, 10–70≈0.6–3 cm, glabrous on both surfaces or sometimes thinly loosely strigose-pubescent in young leaves, the margins and abaxial midrib with densely matted white strigose appressed tufted hairs, 3–6-armed; veins 33–70, uniformly broad and closely spaced. Inflorescences 1–13, usually overtopping the arcuate leaves, first appearing before the leaves, with scapes 13–30 cm long, 3–5 mm wide. Flowers 7–13, in a raceme; pedicels 4–23 mm long, decreasing in length upwards; bracts subulate to linear-lanceolate, 7–25(–30) mm long, ± 2 mm wide; tepals ovate, acute or obtuse, (7–)11–18(–22)≈3–10 mm, inner broader than the outer; stamens subequal or inner shorter than outer, outer 5–9 mm long with filaments 3.5–5 mm long, inner 4.5–7.5 with subulate filaments 2–3.5 mm long, anthers 3.5–8 mm long, thecae fused or slightly emarginate; ovary 5-7 mm≈4 mm, style 1–2 mm long, stigma 1.5–3 mm long. Capsule obconical, 6–10≈4–7 mm, circumscissile. Seeds black and glossy, ovoid, 1.3–2≈1–1.5 mm; testa covered in closely-spaced dome-shaped papillae (similar to Fig 1: 2 & 5, p. 4), cuticle smooth.
