Information
Slender herb, 15–67 cm tall, occasionally tufted with several pseudostems on a rootstock. Corm 1.5–3(–11)≈1–2.5(–5) cm, light yellow to deep orange inside. Leaves linear, grass-like, erect or sometimes straggling, conduplicate at least towards the base, to 67≈0.3–0.8(–2) cm with length depending on stage, thinly pubescent on margins and main veins with 2–3-branched golden brown to whitish hairs, lamina glabrescent, sometimes with a few bifurcate hairs; veins 11–13, distinct, different in size and with variable distance between them. Inflorescences 1–8, overtopped early by the leaves, with scapes up to 42 cm long, 1–2(–3) mm wide, width reducing in steps as pedicels diverge. Flowers (2–)4–5(–10) in a raceme-like arrangement 2–9 cm long; pedicels 3–10(–20) mm long; bracts subulate to linear-lanceolate, 7–30 mm long; tepals all similar, elliptic to lanceolate, 8–11≈3–6 mm; stamens equal, filaments subulate, 1.5–3 mm long, anthers 2.3–5 mm long, emarginate at apex; style columnar, 1–3 mm, stigma pyramidal, 1–2 mm long, with three rows of papillae. Capsule 4–6(–8)≈3–4.5 mm, turbinate, opening with a transverse slit near the middle. Seeds black and glossy, 1–1.2≈1.7 mm, subglobose; testa densely papillate, the papillae dome-shaped, the cuticle smooth. (Fig. 1: 2 & 5, p. 4). Fig. 3, p. 17.

Notes
This species is closely related to H. urceolata, but has generally narrower leaves and more distinctly papillose seeds. Young stages of H. urceolata may easily be confused with mature H. nyasica. The taxon, as defined here, is vicariant with H. urceolata occurring north of H. nyasica .
