Notes
Farahot, ged waraba, ged waraweh, haro haar, hor suhad, hosucait (Som.). This has long been known as H. verticillaris, based on Justicia verticillaris L. f., nom. rej. The name was rejected when the type was found to belong to another species of Hypoestes. Most of the material, particularly from the north, has small flowers and a dense indumentum of short curved-appressed hairs giving stems, leaves and bracteoles a greyish-green tinge. Such plants have been recognized as H. hildebrandtii, but this is here included in the very variable and widespread H. forskaolii. Plants of this appearance are also common in Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia and northern Kenya. Several collections, such as Newbould 985 and 1003, agree with the hildebrandtii form in most characters, but differ by having long spreading hairs on the bracteoles. Such plants may be sympatric with the normal hildebrandtii form and are most common in northern Somalia. Some plants from northern or central Somalia, e.g., Thulin 4224, have a dense greyish indumentum approaching that in H. cinerea, but have narrow leaves. Some collections from Acacia-Commiphora bushland in central and southern Somalia, including Kasmi, Elmi & Rodel 770, Kuchar 16222 and Bally & Melville 16312, have patent-spreading eglandular and glandular hairs on bracteoles and calyx, c. 0.5 mm long spreading hairs on the stem, and purplish corollas. Other plants from southern Somalia, including Thulin, Hedrén & Abdi Dahir 7552 and 7569, have thin and glabrous, relatively large leaves with long petioles, and flowers up to 22 mm long.
