Information
Creeping herb with stems 20–75 cm. long, densely hairy, rooting at the nodes; leafy and flowering shoots reaching a height of 5–10 cm. above ground-level. Leaf-blades ovate to ovate-oblong, 1.2–7 cm. long, 0.5–5.1 cm. wide, acute or subacute at the apex, less often ± rounded, cordate at the base, glabrous above except for lower part of midnerve or latter entirely hairy and with some scattered hairs on the surface as well, pubescent beneath, particularly on the nerves; petiole 0.5–10 cm. long, hairy; stipules oblong or triangular, 3–8 mm. long, 1.5–2.5 mm. wide, bifid, hairy and ciliate. Flowers conspicuously heterostylous, in inflorescences ± 0.4–1.1 cm. in diameter; peduncles 0–1 cm. long; bracts not conspicuous. Calyx-tube 0.6–1.1 mm. long; limb-tube 0.8–1.9 mm. long; lobes lanceolate, 1.5–4.5 mm. long, 0.3–0.8 mm. wide, ciliate. Corolla white or greenish white; tube funnel-shaped, 5.5–9 mm. long, glabrous or slightly pubescent outside; lobes ovate-triangular or oblong, 2–3.5 mm. long, 1–2 mm. wide. Anthers included in long-styled flowers, just exserted in short-styled flowers. Style 6.5 mm. long (exserted 2 mm.) in long-styled flowers, 2.9–3.6 mm. long in short-styled flowers; stigma 0.7–1.1 mm. long. Berries bright orange or reddish, ± 0.7 mm. long, 0.9 mm. wide, sparsely hairy, crowned with similarly coloured persistent calyx-lobes; pyrenes greenish brown, subglobose, 2.2–2.8 mm. long, 2–2.5 mm. wide, dorsal surface strongly convex, ventral surface plane, with 2 grooves. Seeds yellow-brown, lenticular, up to 2.4 mm. long, 2.2 mm. wide, dorsal face convex, ventral face with 2 shallow grooves surrounding a slightly raised median elliptic area. Fig. 7/7–14, p. 111.
