Notes
It seems unlikely Huperzia phlegmaria var. tardieuae (Herter) Tardieu in Adansonia Sér. 2, 10: 18 (1970) & Fl. Madag. 13 & 13 bis: 42, fig. 8/1–4 (1971) is distinct and Tardieu hints as much. I have therefore included Madagascar in the distribution. Eggeling 1576 (in F.D. 1486) from Uganda, Bunyoro District, Budongo Forest, Dec. 1954 found on Entandrophragma utile is sterile but has been named Lycopodium warneckei (i.e. Huperzia warneckei (Nessel) Pic.Serm.) by F. Jarrett. The differences given by Alston (in F.W.T.A. Pterid. and Mém. I.F.A.N. 50) to separate the species of the ‘phlegmaria’ group are slight, and certainly suspect when the immense variation accepted in India and Sri Lanka H. phlegmaria is considered (although several taxa may be confused there), and Dixit, Lycopodiaceae of India: 72 (1988) comments on the ‘variable forms’ which can be easily separated. Eggeling 1576 certainly agrees well with West African material named as Lycopodium warneckei by Alston, and Sierra Leone material has been found on the same Entandrophragma. Without fertile material it is not possible to confirm the identity. H. phlegmaria has been found on Uapaca guineensis.
