Description
Tree to 33 m tall of humid rain-forest to secondary forest, usually in swampy or damp localities occurring from Guinea to W Cameroon, and widespread to Angola and across Africa to Mozambique.The bole is short with low branches and is slightly fluted. The wood varies from brown (as H. molle Stapf, 3) to dull white (as H. africanum (Hook. f.) Benth., 3), and is hard and suitable for carpentry (2, 4). In SE Nigeria it is used for yam stakes (5).A trace of alkaloid has been detected in the bark and roots of material from Congo (Brazzaville) (1).
