Names
Hibiscus nyikensisSprague [family MALVACEAE], in Kew Bull. 1908: 56 (1908). — Cufod. in Ann. Naturh. Mus. Wien, 56: 52 (1948). Syntypes: Nyasaland, Nyika Plateau, Whyte 226 (K); between Mpata and the Tanganyika Plateau, Whyte (K). Whyte 226 (K) is chosen as lectotype.
Information
Perennial herb 1–1·5 m. tall; stems with somewhat appressed-fuscous-stellate hairs. Leaf-lamina up to 10 × 2·5 cm., narrowly oblong-lanceolate, stellate-pubescent on both surfaces, apex acute, margin serrate, base truncate to slightly cordate 5-nerved; petiole up to 2·5 cm. long; stipules 3 mm. long, filiform. Flowers 2·5–3·5 cm. in diam., scarlet, solitary, axillary, and forming racemes at the apices of the stems by reduction of the upper leaves; peduncle up to 3·5 cm. long. Epicalyx of 7–8 bracts; bracts 3–6 mm. long, filiform. Calyx up to 8 mm. long, fuscous-pilose; lobes up to 8 × 2·5 mm., lanceolate, acute. Petals 15–18 mm. long, obovate, with scattered stellate hairs. Staminal tube 5–6 mm. long; free parts of filaments 1–2 mm. long. Style-branches 4·5–6 mm. long. Capsule 8–9 mm. in diam., puberulous. Seeds nearly glabrous.
