Notes
A. & R. Fernandes, in Mem. Soc. Brot. 11: 15 (1956) & Bol. Soc. Brot., sér.2, 43: 285 (1969), divide the species into three varieties differing principally in the indumentum. The East African material is mostly referable to var. capitatum, but plants from more exposed sites approach var. barteri (Hook. f.) A. & R. Fernandes, which may in fact be based on no more than an ecotypic form of the species.
