Habitat
Always recorded from sandy soil, in grassland, as a weed of cultivations or roadsides, or in “bushveld”.

Notes
In the type of H. laxiflora the capsule is exceptionally long, almost equalling the perianth, so that the style and stigmas are exserted. This is exceedingly unusual for H. odorata. Even in such plants, however, the species is readily recognisable from forms of H. linearis by the short rather stout style and longer pseudostaminodes.
