diffuse or decumbent, stellato-tomentose and canescent; lower leaves on long petioles, cordate at base, ovate-oblong, sinuate and crenate, plaited and rugose, 3–5–7-nerved, stellato-pubescent on both sides, canescent on the lower; stipules narrow-lanceolate, acute; peduncles 2-flowered, short or longish, the bracts subulate; calyx thinly tomentose and stellato-pubescent, inflated, membranous, shortly 5-fid, the teeth deltoid; petals not much exceeding the calyx, their broad claws stellato-pubescent at back, much longer than the roundish limb; ovary pedicellate, broader than long, stellato-pubescent. Very similar to H. althæifolia, of which it has the habit and foliage; but the stipules and bracts are smaller, narrower and more acuminate; the pubescence is more stellate and less tomentose, without intermixture of long, white hairs; the petals have much broader claws and smaller limbs, and are stellato-pubescent at back, instead of being fringed with long white hairs; the ovary is shorter, and evidently stipitate. These characters, if constant, may define the species.
