Names
HERMANNIA candicans Ait. [family STERCULIACEAE], Hort. Kew. 2. p. 412.;—Jacq. Hort. Schoenb. t. 117. DC. Prod. 1. p. 494.
HERMANNIA præmorsa Wendl. [family STERCULIACEAE], non E. & Z. Drege 7297, 7299.
Information
suffruticose, erect or diffuse; branches albo-tomentose or stellato-pubescent, rarely glabrescent; leaves on long petioles, elliptical or ovate-oblong, obtuse, subentire or undulato-crenate, flat or somewhat plaited, albo-tomentose on one or both sides; stipules subulate or narrow lanceolate, much shorter than the petiole; peduncles racemoso-paniculate, 1–3 flowered, bracteate near the summit; bracts subulate or lanceolate; flower-buds tomentose; calyx cup-shaped, albo-tomentose or pubescent, angular, semi-5-fid, the lobes deltoid-acuminate; petals twice as long as the calyx, the glabrous claw longer than the oval-oblong limb; filaments obovate, equalling the hastate anthers; ovary albo-tomentose. Very variable in size and pubescence, but tolerably constant in other characters. I have no hesitation in uniting, under one head, the various specimens of E. & Z. above quoted. Var γ. is the most glabrous, and seems to have grown in a very moist station, whence also its fistular stem; δ, on the other hand is starved with drought.
Distribution
SOUTH AFRICA Frequent in Uitenhage and Albany. George, E. & Z.! Schneeberg and various places in Caffirland, Drege! Somerset, Mrs. F. W. Barber! var. γ. near the Berg River, E. & Z.! δ, near the Zwartkops, Zeyher! (Herb. T.C.D.. Hook., Sond., &c.).
Notes
H. incana, Thunb.! referred here by E. & Z., belongs to H. holosericea. Willdenow's H. mollis, described from garden specimens, resembles some of the more canescent wild specimens.
