Information
Perennial herb or shrublet, up to 35 cm high, ± densely pubescent with appressed disk-based hairs and sometimes also short glandular hairs. Leaves alternate, oblong, narrowly oblanceolate to oblanceolate, 2–17(–22) x 0.5–2(–3) mm, cuneate to attenuate at the base, acute to obtuse at the apex, with flat to involute margins. Flowers in ± well developed cymes or sometimes interrupted with some flowers below the inflorescence. Calyx-lobes equal to somewhat unequal, 1.7–4.2 x 0.5–1.2 mm in flower. Corolla usually white or yellowish, more rarely bluish or reddish, funnel-shaped, regular or somewhat zygomorphic, 2.5–7 mm long, villous with yellow hairs in throat, the tube glabrous or rarely somewhat pubescent outside; lobes equal or almost so, pubescent outside. Style 0.6–1.5 mm long, with slightly 2-fid or notched sterile tip protruding 0.02–0.14 mm above the stigmas. Nutlets whitish, beige or reddish, ovate in outline, (1.1–)1.5–2.4 x 1.2–2 mm, tuberculate and sometimes ridged.
Range
N1–3 Djibouti, Sudan, Socotra, the Arabian Peninsula and eastwards to Pakistan.
Altitude range
200–1650 m.
Distribution
SOMALIA Thulin & Warfa 6088; Thulin, Abdi Dahir & Abdisalam Hassan 8986; Thulin & al. 10589.
Notes
This is a very variable taxon particularly in indumentum characters. Thulin, Abdi Dahir & Ahmed Osman 9476, cited as E. persicum by Lönn (1999), is a shrublet with characteristically glutinous young parts and very long narrow leaves growing on gypsum outcrops at 1600–1650 m in N3 with normal E. persicum in the vicinity. This may well be a distinct species, represented also by Thulin, Abdi Dahir & Ahmed Osman 10126 and 10196.
