Information
Shrub 0.5–2 m high; densely branched, the branches grey-tomentose, glabrescent, distally densely leafy. Leaves grey-green, sessile, linear to narrowly lanceolate, 2–7 cm long, 0.3–0.9 cm wide, base half-amplexicaul, margins revolute, apex acute and mucronate, sparsely arachnoid-tomentellous and glandular above, densely white-tomentose beneath. Capitula 15–30 mm long (at anthesis; buds smaller), heterogamous, 3–12 together in terminal corymbs; stalks of individual capitula very short but may seem long with small leaves/bracts; phyllaries silvery white and shiny, the outermost pale straw-coloured and sometimes tinged pink in bud, multiseriate, ovate grading through elliptical to spatulate, 5–24 mm long, acute, the stereome pilose in the outer ones, becoming glandular in the inner ones; receptacle honeycombed. Florets yellow; female florets few (10–30), tube filiform, 2–2.4 mm long, lobes 0.4–0.5 mm long, style 2.8–3 mm long; inner florets many (100–300), tube narrowly infundibuliform, 2.8–3 mm long, lobes 0.6–0.7 mm long and sparsely glandular, anthers 1.4–1.5 mm long, style 3.9–4.3 mm long. Achenes ellipsoid, 0.7–1.4 mm long, glabrous or sparsely pilose; pappus white, 3.2–4.1 mm long, the bristles subplumose distally.

Notes
The varieties were united by Hedberg, who considers them to be parts of a cline. Plants from the lower end of the range have ± patent leaves which are glabrous above, while those from the upper part of the range have erect leaves which are tomentose on both surfaces.
