Information
Perennial herb becoming woody at the base, 0.3–1 m high, with scandent or straggling branches to 2 m; many-stemmed, the stems grey-lanate but glabrescent, glandular, strongly aromatic (of pig manure?), with continuous wings 1–2 mm wide. Leaves lanceolate or narrowly lanceolate, 1–12 cm long, 0.2–1.8 cm wide, base narrowing gradually into decurrent stem wings, margins revolute, apex acute, arachnoid-pubescent above but glabrescent, white- or grey-felted beneath, glabrescent in older leaves, glandular; 1–3-veined. Capitula heterogamous, 2.5–3.5 mm long, many together in congested clusters combining to form large terminal corymbose or paniculate inflorescences to 12 cm across; stalks of individual capitula absent; receptacle alveolate, fimbrillate; phyllaries in 2–5 series, lanceolate, imbricate, equalling the florets, the outer pale brown or translucent, the inner distally pale yellow, 1–2.5 mm long, obtuse, the outermost pubescent at base, otherwise glabrous, the inner often with a patch of glands halfway. Outer florets 3–7, tube filiform to cylindrical and slightly widening just below the lobes, 1.2–1.5 mm long, lobes 0.1–0.3 mm long, style 1.5–2 mm long; inner florets 0–2(–3), tube cylindrical or narrowly infundibuliform, 1.6–2 mm long, lobes 0.2–0.3 mm long, anthers 0.8–1 mm long, style 1.9–2.2 mm long. Notes
H. stenopterum and H. odoratissimum have been confused quite often, but the presence ofªflorets and the lower number of hermaphrodite florets distinguishes H. stenopterum. Knox (pers. comm.) feels an altitudinal sex ratio change might be involved. I feel dubious about merging these two taxa at varietal level, and for the moment prefer to leave them as they stand.
