Information
Annual or short-lived perennial herb; stems decumbent or ascending, up to 90 cm long. Leaf-blades linear-lanceolate to elliptic, 13–80 x 3–27 mm, acute at the apex; stipule sheath c. 0.5–3 mm long with 0.5–3 mm long fimbriae. Flowers in apparently axillary distinctly pedunculate inflorescences, usually paired at the nodes; bracts minute or absent; pedicels 2–15 mm long, spreading. Calyx with a distinct limb-tube; lobes narrowly triangular, 0.5–1.5 mm long. Corolla white, pink or bluish, often with pale yellow tube; tube 1.5–4.5 mm long; lobes 1–3 mm long. Capsule 2–4 mm long. Seeds black, c. 0.3 mm long.
Range
C2; S1, 2 widespread in tropical Africa, Madagascar, Arabia, and, perhaps introduced, America.
Altitude range
100–450 m.

Notes
Abdi cajan (Som.).The Somali material, with small isostylous flowers, is var. pentandrus. Var. minor Bremek. occurs in eastern Africa southwards to South Africa.
