Information
Annual or perennial, erect to suberect, ascending or straggling herbs, (6) 15–50(60) cm. tall; one to many branched slender stems from a ± woody base; stems slightly ribbed, glabrous, scabrid or ± densely hirsute, often becoming glabrous towards the apex. Leaves (14)19–29(32) x (0.5)1–5(7) mm., narrowly linear, linear-lanceolate to lanceolate-elliptic, rarely filiform, acute and shortly aristate, arista 0.5–1 m. long, glabrous or hirsute, mostly ± scabrid to hirsute on upper surface along margins and midrib beneath, upper leaves ± glabrous or hirsute at the base, margins revolute; stipular sheath (0.9)1.2–2(2.4) mm. long, hirsute, produced into (2, 3) 4–6 reflexed filiform fimbriae (1.4)1.8–4.5(6) mm. long. Inflorescences usually with 2 or, more rarely, 3 with additional accessory, flowers at a node, pedicellate or rarely subsessile; peduncles (3)24–34(79) mm. long; pedicels (1)3–7(15) mm. long, glabrous. Calyx tube (0.5)0.7–1.3(1.5) x (0.4)0.9–1.4(1.6) mm., obovate-subglobose glabrous; lobes narrowly triangular to narrowly ovate-triangular, ending in a short seta or mucro, margins with short stiff hairs, otherwise glabrous. Corolla lobes variously coloured, white, cream, yellowish, blueish, mauve, purple, pink or red, sometimes bicoloured on the same plant; buds usually darker in colour (red or pink), open flowers becoming paler with age?; back of lobes and tubes paler or brownish to pinkish green or greenish white, interior and exterior glabrous or very rarely in longer tubed forms throat inside very slightly papillose; tube altogether (2.7)3–6.5(7) mm. long, the dilated part (0.7)1–2.1(2.4) x (0.7)0.8–1.2(1.45) mm., the narrow part (0.4)0.5–0.9(1.1) mm. wide; lobes (0.9)1–2.2(2.4) x (0.6)0.8–1.2(1.3) mm., ovate-triangular to ovate-elliptic, subacute to slightly apiculate. Anthers narrowly ovate, 1–1.5 mm. long; pollen (3)4(6) colporate. Style and stigma together as long as the narrow tube, stigma tip just touching anthers or ± isostylous. Capsules (1)1.2–2.1(2.5) mm. long and (1.8)2–2.9(3.3) mm. wide, hemispherical to subglobose, glabrous. Seeds brownish, c. 0.4 mm. long, round-subconic.
Habitat
Always in moist localities, in open, secondary, swampy or wooded grasslands, on coastal sandflats and stabilized sand dunes, in rocky or stoney ground, in waste or cultivated land, along paths and roads
