Information
Perennial herb to 50 cm; stems reddish-brown, erect, branched; branches leafy, glabrous to minutely pubescent with ± retrorse hairs. Leaves often fascicled with smaller leaves in the axils, linear, 10–30 mm long, 1–1.5 mm wide, apex acute, margins entire, glabrous, single-veined. Inflorescence spicate, 3–7 cm long; bracts ovate, 3–4 mm long, acuminate to apiculate, margins hyaline, glabrous. Calyx ovate, 3–4 mm long, obtuse or emaginate, hyaline, glabrous. Corolla white with an orange to reddish brown throat, 8–12 mm long; tube 2.5–4 mm, slit to about 2/3 its length; limb to 8 mm, glabrous; lobes 1–1.5 mm, oblong. Anthers ± 1 mm; filaments short. Ovary ovoid, ± 4 mm long, glabrous; style shorter than the tube, bent apically at ± right angles and exserting through the slit in the tube; stigma elongate. Capsule oblong, 3–5 mm long, glabrous, separating into 2 cocci at maturity. Fig. 52, p. 199.

USES. None recorded on specimens from our area; recorded to be poisonous to cattle (fide Adamson 554). CONSERVATION Least Concern (LC); widespread and common. Rolfe describes the species by syntypes Welwitsch 4786 & Jan. 1860, Welwitsch 4787 (both at K). Hedberg (op. cit.) designated Welwitsch 4786 as the holotype. This was d by Roessler who changed it to lectotype.
