Notes
USES.Minor medicinal against syphilis (Tanner), against stomach-ache and gonorrhoea (Maitland)CONSERVATION Least concern (LC) The other subspecies, subsp. schimperi (Sch.Bip.) J.Baagøe, is restricted to Ethiopia. It is distinct in the more annual habit and fewer outer phyllaries. There is one collection from Kitale (anno 1962), said to be of plants hanging on from being cultivated a few years before. This taxon is sometimes cultivated as ‘wild Niger oil’. Charles Jeffrey (pers. comm.) feels this taxon is more closely related to G. abyssinica – possibly the wild ancestral form of the crop! - and should be transferred to that species.
