Entry From
Flora Capensis, Vol 1, page 113, (1894) Author: (By W. H. HARVEY).
Names
FRANKENIA capitata Webb & Berth. [family FRANKENIACEAE], Fl. Canar 1. p. 131. t. 16
Information
stems woody, prostrate or ascending, much branched, glabrous or hairy; leaves linear, glabrous, with strongly revolute margins; petioles short, ciliated, petals much longer than the glabrous, puberulous or hispid calyx. Very variable in the amount and nature of the pubescence, and somewhat in the breadth of the leaves.
Distribution
SOUTH AFRICA In salt marshes, &c., from Capetown to Uitenhage; not uncommon. (Herb. T.C.D., Hook.)
Notes
The above 4 varieties occur at the Cape, and three of them (lævis, Nothria & Krebsii) have usually been held for species; but after a careful examination of many specimens, in the Dublin & Hookerian Herbaria, and from various parts of the world, I find it impossible to determine where one variety begins and another ends. Several other reputed species might be added to the list of synonyms. The least variable character is found in the linear, strongly revolute leaves; but this is less marked in Nothria than in the other varieties. ADDENDA : to F. capitata, var. α, add Zey. 1955; var. δ, Zey. 1954.
