Branched annual herb, sometimes slightly woody at the base, up to 0.5 m tall; branches slender, puberulous to glabrescent. Leaves alternate; stipules ovate, acuminate, c. 3.5 x 2 mm; petiole 0.5–3.5 cm long; blade ovate to lanceolate, 1–6 x 0.5–4 cm, sparsely hirsute above, sparsely white tomentose beneath, with longer hairs on the nerves, cystoliths usually visible above, base cuneate, margin serrate or crenulate at least in the upper half, apex long acuminate. Inflorescences sessile, usually two in each leaf axil; involucral bracts (3–)4(–6), 0.4–0.6 x 0.3–0.4 cm, base cuneate, apex rounded, slightly mucronate or shortly acuminate. Flowers completely embedded in woolly hairs. Male flowers usually many, female flowers few. Achene ellipsoid, pale brownish.
