Shrub or small tree up to 7 m tall, with a trunk up to 0.8 m in diam.; bark grey or greyish brown; latex clear, watery, rarely milky white; young branches puberulous to hirsute, with brownish bark. Leaves distichous, opposite or subopposite, sometimes subverticillate; stipules free, lateral, linear to narrowly lanceolate, up to 1 cm long, long persistent; petiole 0.3–1.3 cm long, puberulous; blade oblong to lanceolate, 4–16.5 x 1–6 cm, papery, base cuneate to slightly rounded, margin entire or subentire, apex acute, acuminate or tridentate, mostly scabrous on both sides, with 6–10 pairs of lateral veins. Figs solitary in the leaf axils, scabrous, on peduncles up to 2 cm long, slender, puberulous; basal bracts 3, ovate, up to 2 mm long, the other bracts scattered on the outside of the receptacle usually smaller; receptacle ± stipitate, pyriform, ellipsoid or subglobose, up to 3.5 x 1 cm; ostiole prominent, with 8–15 puberulous ostiolar bracts clearly visible from outside.
