Information
Annual (or biennial?), 1/2–4 1/2 ft. high. Stem simple below or occasionally branching at the base, often rather copiously branching above, it and the branches sometimes ending in a 3 to many times forked cyme, sometimes terminating in a 3–5-rayed umbel, with cyme-branches in the axils of the leaves below the umbel, glabrous or rather thinly puberulous on the cyme-branches. Leaves alternate or with a whorl of 3–5 under the umbel, 3/4–3 1/2 in. long, 1–7 lin. broad, linear-lanceolate or lanceolate, acute, narrowed to a short petiole-like base, entire, glabrous on both sides. Stipules none. Cyme-branches 2 1/2–8 in. long, 3 to many times forked. Bracts opposite, sessile, 1/4–1 in. long, 1/6–1 in. broad, triangular-ovate, acute or acuminate, very broadly cuneate, subtruncate or cordate at the base. Involucre solitary, very shortly pedicellate or sessile, 2/3–1 lin. in diam., cup-shaped or somewhat obconic, glabrous outside, with 4 glands and 5 erect oblong lobes notched at the apex and more or less ciliate; glands 1/4– 1/2 lin. in their greater diam., 1/8– 1/5 lin. in their lesser diam., somewhat crescent-shaped, but usually with the outer margin straight or nearly so, 2-horned, with the horns 1/6– 1/2 lin. long. Filaments of the stamens hairy or glabrous, sometimes both forms occur in the same involucre. Capsule 1 1/2–1 3/4 lin. in diam., exserted on a slender pedicel, usually glabrous, occasionally slightly puberulous; styles free, suberect or spreading, 1/2– 3/4 lin. long, bifid. Seeds about 1 lin. long, ellipsoid or oblong-ellipsoid, smooth, with a small caruncle, at first pale ochreous, then with a dark brown spot at each end, finally dark grey or blackish.
