Information
Spreading much-branched shrub 2–4 m high. Branches fleshy, 3(–4)-angled, deeply winged, irregularly and shallowly constricted into oblong segments c. 20 x 3.5 cm, bright green, conspicuously variegated when young; angles sinuately toothed, with teeth 2–4 cm apart. Spine-shields joined to form a continuous horny margin 1–2.5 mm wide along the angles; spine pairs to 1.5 cm long, much shorter at the constrictions; prickles minute. Cymes solitary, rarely 2 at each flowering eye, 2–6-forked, with peduncles and cyme branches to c. 1 cm long. Cyathia 8 mm in diam. with involucre red; glands 4 mm broad, touching, yellow. Perianth of the female flower with 3 obvious lobes 0.5 mm long; styles 3.5 mm long, joined to halfway. Capsule exserted on an erect pedicel c. 6 mm long, acutely 3-lobed with truncate base and apex, 7 x 15 mm. Seeds not seen.
