Information
Compact shrub to 1.5 m high branching from the base, sparsely rebranching above. Branches 4–6-angled, deeply winged, regularly constricted into segments 3–4 cm long, 4–7 cm wide; angles sinuately toothed, with teeth to 1.5 cm apart at the base of the segments, closer above. Spine-shields joined to form a continuous horny margin 3–5 mm wide along the angles; spine-pairs robust, to 2.5 cm long, usually less especially towards the constrictions; prickles minute but obvious; flowering eye c. 5 mm above the base of the spines, flanked by a pair of secondary spines to 2.5 mm long. Cymes solitary, 1-forked with cyathia arranged vertically, on a stout peduncle 3–7 mm long, cyme-branches shorter. Cyathia c. 10 mm in diam.; glands c. 5 mm broad, touching, golden yellow. Perianth of the female flower obvious, 3-lobed, with lobes 2 mm long, toothed; styles 5 mm long. Capsule sessile, obtusely 3-lobed with truncate base and apex, 7 x 11 mm, blackish purple. Seeds ovoid, 3.5 x 3 mm, smooth, buff, finely speckled.

Notes
Dibu, divo (Som.). Unfortunately, the illustration accompanying the type description in Fl. Pl. Afr. 36, t. 1408 (1963) is not of E. ballyi, but of the related, newly described dwarf species below, E. leontopoda.
