Information
Terrestrial, semi-saprophytic herb 10–75 cm tall.Perennating organs subterranean, rhizomatous, 10–12 cm long, c. 1 cm in diameter, branched, vertical; roots c. 1 mm in diameter, white.Leaves vestigial, 2–4 cm long, linear, purplish.Inflorescences 1–3, produced with or before the leaves, laxly few- to several-flowered.Pedicel and ovary arched, 10–16 mm long; bracts 3–9 mm long, lanceolate, acuminate.Flowers spreading; sepals and petals greenish-brown, purple or claret, lip white with purple veins and margins.Sepals erect, 15–40 × 1–2 mm, linear-spathulate, acute.Petals 10–16 × 2.5–4 mm, narrowly elliptic, acute, lying over column.Lip 10–16 mm long, 6–11 mm wide when flattened, 3-lobed in the apical third; side lobes erect, oblong, rounded; mid-lobe c. 5 × 7–10 mm, transversely elliptic, obtuse or emarginate; callus of 3 ridges, turning to papillae on the mid-lobe; spur 2–5 mm long, conical to cylindrical, at right angles to lip.Column 5 mm long.Fruit pendent, 25–30 mm long.

Notes
This species is very variable in size of plant, colour and length of sepals, and considerable variation can occur even within one colony.Specimens from southern Malawi, for example Benson 983, tend to have particularly long sepals.
