Information
Rather slender, terrestrial, semi-saprophytic herb 22–80 cm tall.Perennating organs subterranean, a branched, cylindrical rhizome to 15 cm long, 8–14 mm in diameter, horizontal or vertical, with triangular scales at the nodes; roots few and short.Leaves vestigial, bract-like, 4–9 cm long, purplish.Inflorescence laxly many-flowered; scape with 1–2 short tubular sheaths.Pedicel and ovary c. 10 mm long; bracts 4–6(12) mm long.Sepals purple-brown; petals light pink-brown or yellow-purple; lip white, yellow at base and with yellow papillae, the side lobes purple-veined; spur yellowish.Sepals semi-erect, the tips recurved, 13–21 × 1.5–2 mm, linear, acute.Petals 12–15 × 2–3 mm, linear to lanceolate, acute, the tips curved back, lying over the column.Lip 11–20 × 7–10 mm, 3-lobed at about halfway, side lobes erect, obtuse; mid-lobe 6–10 × 6–8 mm, elliptic, obtuse, the edge slightly undulate; callus of 3 basal ridges turning to papillae on mid-lobe; spur 4–5.5 mm long, straight, somewhat bulbous at apex.Column 6 mm long; foot 0.5 mm long.Capsule 12 mm long, pendent, elliptic.
Habitat
Usually in colonies in miombo and mixed deciduous woodlands including escarpment miombo, Brachystegia/Uapaca and mopane woodlands, on Kalahari Sand, sandy and sandy loam soils
