rhizome stout, woody, thickened at the nodes; leaves in a fascicle of 4 to 6, ensiform or elongate-linear, acute, strongly veined, suberect or somewhat recurved, 1/3–1 ft. long, with 2 or 3 short exterior sheaths at the base; scape basal, erect, stout, 3/4–1 1/2 ft. high, with numerous lanceolate or spathaceous somewhat imbricate sheaths; racemes many-flowered, somewhat dense, 3–6 in. long; bracts lanceolate, acuminate, 1/2–1 in. long; pedicels about 3/4 in. long; flowers rather large, yellow, or the petals and lip pink or white and the sepals brown; sepals oblong-lanceolate or attenuate from a broader base, acute or acuminate, over 3/4 in. long; petals elliptic-oblong or ovate, obtuse or subacute, as long as and sometimes longer than the sepals and over twice as broad; lip broadly ovate, 3-lobed, rather shorter than the petals; side lobes broadly rounded; front lobe broadly elliptic or rounded; disc with 5–7 somewhat thickened veins, verrucose behind and with scattered crests or papillæ in front; spur oblong, rather stout, nearly 1/6 in. long; column broadly oblong, about 1/4 in. long. null

Notes
This has been more or less confused with E. dregeana, Lindl., and may yet contain more than a single species. It is very variable, and the range of colour is remarkable. Examination of living plants may show further differences. The two specimens cited by Schlechter as E. dregeana, Lindl., I have not seen, but geographically they should belong here, and I have included them.
