Information
Robust, terrestrial, semi-saprophytic herb 25–40 cm tall, drying black.Perennating organs subterranean, fleshy, rhizomatous, cigar-shaped, much branched, 5–7 cm long or more, 1.5–2.5 cm in diameter, with many nodes and triangular scales; roots numerous, 1–1.5 mm in diameter.Leaves vestigial, to 6 cm long, brown.Inflorescences 1–3, laxly or densely many-flowered; scape yellow-green with 4–5 imbricate, scarious, basal sheaths and another in the middle.Pedicel and ovary 9–16 mm long, the ovary slightly verrucose, soon swelling; bracts 9–25 mm long, linear-setose.Flowers rather untidy-looking, arising at various angles, not opening wide, violet-scented; sepals brownish or yellow-green tinged with purple, petals yellow-green or white tinged with purple or brown, lip white with purple veins.Sepals 12–20 × 2–3.5 mm, oblong, acute, keeled.Petals 10–14 × 3–4 mm, narrowly elliptic, acute, overlying the column.Lip 11–16 mm long, 9–9.5 mm wide when flattened, 3-lobed in the apical third; side lobes erect, rounded and erose in front; mid-lobe 6–7 × 5–6 mm, obovate-oblong, the edge undulate; callus of 3 basal ridges with 3–5 lines of long papillae on the mid-lobe; spur 3–8 mm long, rather stout, bulbous at tip, straight or decurved.Column 5 mm long; foot 1–2 mm long.Fruit 28–30 mm long, pendent, ellipsoid.

Flower size and lip ornamentation is variable in this species, and peloric and partly peloric forms are not uncommon.Williamson has described such specimens as E. ecalcarata and E. farcta respectively.
