Information
Shrub or small tree to 5 m. tall. Leaflets with oblanceolate or obovate blades, 4.5–12 cm. long, 2–5.5 cm. wide, abruptly short acuminate, cuneate at the base, frequently somewhat decurrent on the 4–10 mm. long petiolule; the lateral leaflets unequal sided; petiole (2.5–)6–14 cm. long. Inflorescence on leafy shoots; pedicels 2.5–3 cm. long. Sepals narrowly lanceolate, 8–12 mm. long. Petals unequal, narrowly oblong, the adaxial pair 5.5–6.5 cm. long, the abaxial 1–1.5 cm. long, clawed, yellow or yellowish-green, papery. Free stamens 4–5, 2–3 cm. long, curved; staminode 0.8–1.5 cm. long. Gynophore 1.5–2 cm. long; ovary cylindrical; stigma turbinate. Fruits up to 20 cm. long, torulose. Fig. 11.

Notes
The extreme forms from the West African dry-country forest and the rain-forest of the Congo Basin and Uganda appear very distinct. The examination of a moderate amount of material, however, shows that the forms intergrade and are indistinguishable on a quantitative basis.
