Information
Plant erect, 15–35 cm, stems simple or branched from the base upwards, somewhat succulent, subglabrous to moderately furnished with multicellular hairs. Leaves narrowly oblong-lanceolate, on the main stem 4–9 x 0.8–1.6 cm, acuminate, sessile with rounded auricles at the base, indumentum as for the stem. Inflorescence bright carmine-red, in flower c. 3–5 x 1–1.5 cm, elongating to c. 18 cm in fruit, axis white-floccose. Tepals of fertile flowers diverse in form: outer 2 firm, oblong-ovate c. 1 mm, rapidly narrowed to a short mucro, with fine midrib and usually 2 pairs of lateral nerves; inner 2 blunt, somewhat shorter, broadly hyaline-margined with a narrow 3-nerved central vitta; central tepal intermediate. Fruiting burr c. 12 mm in diam. including the rigid, stramineous spines, lanate within. Pseudostaminodes c. 1.5–2 mm, strongly dentate-fimbriate all round. Style slender, c. 4–5 mm.
