Notes
The altitude 2900 ft (870 m) given on Purves 72 from Zomba (Somba) is probably deceptive; it is indeed about the correct figure for the town but the specimen almost certainly came from higher up. Several specimens from northern Malawi, e.g. Pawek 2079 (Nyika Plateau, Malawi National Park, Nganda Peak, 10.iv.1969) (the specimen furnishing the upper altitudinal limit) are not separable from Eriosema buchananii var. subprostratum Verdc. (type from southern Tanzania) but this is probably not worth retaining. Pawek 3297 (Rumphi Distr., Nyika, Kasaramba road at c. 2350 m, 22.xii.1969) has a distinctive appearance and is said to have pale yellow flowers; the standard appendages were absent in the flowers examined. I think it is merely an unusual form of the species. Brummitt & Patel 15626 (Chiradzulu Mt., southern end of summit ridge at 1675 m, 11.v.1980) has short inflorescences with short peduncles but is probably only another form; it also has no standard appendages.
