Information
Culms 60–100 cm. high. Panicle oblong, 15–35 cm. long, the shortly pedicelled (0.5–1.5 mm.) spikelets solitary or in groups of 2–3 and appressed to the raceme-like primary branches, these 4–9 cm. long, stiff, scaberulous.
Range
DISTR. T4, 7, 8 southwards to Rhodesia and Angola (subsp. sclerantha from Rhodesia and Angola to South Africa)
Altitude range
1000–1700 m.

Notes
The spikelets are very similar to those of E. racemosa, E. sclerantha being distinguished by the woolly basal sheaths and racemose panicle-branches. Subsp. sclerantha is a smaller plant, typically 30 cm. high, with a shorter ovate panicle.
