ENTEROPOGON monostachyos (Vahl) K. Schum. [family POACEAE], (1895).
Information
Tufted perennial up to 1 m high; sheaths laterally flattened and strongly keeled, loosely hairy along the margins with fine white hairs. Raceme solitary, 8–15 cm long. Spikelets 2- to rarely 3-flowered; fertile lemma 6–8 mm long, shortly bearded on the callus with hairs less than 2 mm long, with an awn 2.5–5 mm long; 2nd lemma similar to the fertile but smaller.

Notes
Represented in Somalia by a single collection that corresponds with subsp. africanus Clayton in Kew Bull. 21: 109 (1967). This has a generally 2-flowered spikelet and the awn of the fertile lemma is 2.5–5 mm long. Subsp. monostachyos, from India, has a normally 3-flowered spikelet and an awn up to 8 mm long.
