Dwarf tufted annual; stems 1–12 cm long and 0.2–0.3 mm thick, angular. Sheaths usually 2, at least the basal purplish, the upper ending in a short triangular lobe. Spikelets 2–4 x 1–2 mm, ovate, usually 10–20-flowered. Glumes c. 1 mm long, pale to dark reddish brown with a green midrib ending in or near the obtuse tip, with or without a narrow pale margin. Perianth-bristles usually present, shorter than the nutlet, 4–5, with recurved spine-like teeth. Stamens 2. Style with 2 stigmas. Nutlet c. 0.5 x 0.4 mm, broadly obovate, biconvex, smooth and glossy, as mature almost black; appendage greyish, minute, flattened.
