stems 2–3 ft. long, terete, olivaceous, white-spotted, simple or verticillately branched at the nodes; branches again verticillately ramulose; leaf-sheaths 1 1/4 in., spreading; male spikelets numerous, linear-oblong, in loosely paniculate cymes; cymes 4–5 in. long; spathes 1 1/4 in. long, flat, ovate, lanceolate; bracts shorter than the flowers, ovate, acuminate; perianth 1/8 in. long; outer segments linear-oblong, shorter than the inner; anthers apiculate; female inflorescence 3–4 in. long, linear-oblong, spicate-cymose; flowers three-sided; perianth-segments nearly equal, linear-oblong; fruit ovoid, somewhat 3-cornered, as long as the persistent perianth, 1-celled, 1-seeded. null
