Information
Terrestrial or epilithic; rhizome short-decumbent, sparsely branched, up to 21 mm in diameter, with stramineous to ferrugineous ovate to linear scales up to 18≈4 mm, apex caudate to acuminate, entire or with a few hairs and pyriform glands. Fronds tufted, suberect to arching, up to 1.4 m long; stipe proximally castaneous, stramineous to greenish higher up, up to 75 cm long and 10 mm in diameter, with dense to moderate stramineous to ferrugineous scales, ovate to filiform, to 25≈6 mm, often with a few multicellular hairs and glands; lamina herbaceous, ovate to deltate, 2- to 3-pinnate, up to 64 cm long; rachisstramineous, becoming narrowly winged towards apex, eglandular or sparsely glandular, and moderately to sparsely set with scales to 8≈1.5 mm and hairs; pinnae in up to 14 stalked pairs, basal pinna pair inaequilaterally triangular to broadly ovate or deltate, up to 32≈25 cm, basal pair shorter or longer than pair above, with up to 10 stalked pinnule pairs; pinna-rachis narrowly winged for most of length, eglandular or sparsely glandular, abaxially with hairs and scales similar to, but smaller than those on rachis; pinnules narrowly triangular to lanceolate, distally basiscopically decurrent, acroscopic pinnule on basal pinnae up to 94≈34 mm, basiscopic pinnule on basal pinnae up to 145≈52 mm, with up to 2 pairs of stalked segments; costaglandular or eglandular, narrowly winged, variously set with isocytic or moniliform hairs and scales; segmentsspaced, inaequilaterally narrowly ovate-obtuse to oblong-obtuse, basiscopically decurrent, up to 28≈9 mm, shallowly to deeply lobed, lobes serrate, adaxially glabrous, with a few glands along and between veins and/or with a few filiform scales along costa, abaxially with hairs and scales to 3≈1.2 mm, and/or oblong to clavate glands. Sori medial on predominantly anadromous vein branches, essentially 2-seriate on segments, discrete, circular, up to 1.6 mm in diameter; sporangium stalk simple, with one or more glandular cells, or with a long uniseriate hair; indusium persistent, brown, firmly herbaceous, reniform, glabrous, margin repand, rarely lacerate, often strongly revolute, up to 1.6 mm in diameter. Spores ellipsoidal, monolete, perispore folded into low tubercules or reticulate ridges, finely rugose to ruminate, 28–50≈20–31 mm.

USES. None recorded for our area. CONSERVATION Widespread; least concern (LC). The new name D. lewalleana had to be chosen as D. pentagona is already occupied by Dryopteris pentagona Bonap., pterid. 5: 64, 65 (1917).
